More Than Just a Pub Crawl

History, character and great ales — woven through every street and every stop

The Oakham Pub Tour isn’t just a pub tour — it’s one of the finest ways to explore this extraordinary little market town. Between stops we’ll pass the unique Norman castle, discover atmospheric alleyways, see the ancient Buttercross and stocks in the market square, and uncover the kind of local stories that only a guide who actually lives here can tell.

A drink is included in every pub we visit — beer, real ale, cider or soft drink, your choice. Rutland is famed for its extraordinary food and drink, and its pubs are a big part of that reputation. This tour visits five of the finest, each with its own remarkable character and history.

“I have fond memories of the Admiral Hornblower — I stayed there for a few nights during the week of the Queen’s funeral, visiting a dear friend who lived locally. The atmosphere was rather surreal, but this pub and this beautiful little town made such an impression on me that I decided to move here. Well, ten minutes walk away. This tour is my way of sharing what I fell in love with.”

The Five Pubs

Five remarkable stops through the heart of Oakham

The Lord Nelson, Oakham
Stop 2

The Lord Nelson

Nestled in a corner of the market square — small-looking outside, surprisingly large within. As Rutland’s motto says: Much in Little! Masterfully restored with award-winning local ales, gins, guest ales and craft beers.

The Admiral Hornblower, Oakham
Stop 3

The Admiral Hornblower

A lovingly restored 17th-century former farmhouse, renowned for both its wonderful pub atmosphere and its excellent food. The pub that convinced your guide to move to Rutland.

Captain Noel, Oakham
Stop 4

The Captain Noel

For over 60 years these premises were the Royal British Legion, acquired from Captain Noel Newton — a WWI officer awarded the Military Cross. Built onto part of The Limes, a grand house named after the tall trees in its walled garden.

The Grainstore Brewery Tap, Oakham
Final Stop ⭐

The Grainstore Brewery Tap

The perfect finale — Oakham’s own award-winning brewery tap, named Good Pub Guide Own Brew Pub of the Year five times. Beers brewed on the premises, right next to the station. There’s even a shop to take your favourites home.

🌾
Stop 1 The Wheatsheaf — our first stop, right by the castle

A lovely 17th-century local — snug, cosy, with oak beams, a beer garden, real ales, whiskies and rums. After walking past the unique Oakham Castle, this is exactly the right place to begin.
