London Was Built to Be Seen From the River

The South Bank walk that gives you the finest views in London — and stories no guidebook will tell you

The Lambeth Walk Private Tour takes us along the south bank of the River Thames from London Bridge to Lambeth Palace, finishing next to the Houses of Parliament — dipping away into side streets along the way to get a real taste of London well away from the tourist crowds. Much of this southern shore has a fascinating mix of Dickensian industrial poverty and rich showbiz heritage, and both are still clearly visible today.

Just as New York was built to be seen from the sea, London was built to be seen from the river — and from the south bank you get better views of St Paul’s Cathedral, the City of London skyscrapers and the Houses of Parliament than almost anywhere on the north side. Monet knew this, painting the Thames from here repeatedly. Now it’s your turn.

🏚️
Ruined palaces & notorious prisons The southern shore of the Thames in this stretch of London holds some extraordinary survivals and ruins — palaces that once rivalled those on the north bank, and some of the most notorious prisons in English history, whose stories are as dark and compelling as anything in the city.
🎭
The Globe Theatre & Tate Modern Shakespeare’s Globe — rebuilt on its original Bankside site, where Elizabethan London came for entertainment, bear-baiting and theatre in equal measure. And the magnificent Tate Modern in the former Bankside Power Station — one of the great transformations of a building in modern London.
Lambeth Palace — home of the Archbishop of Canterbury The ancient Lambeth Palace — official London residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury and spiritual home of the worldwide Anglican faith. One of the oldest continuously occupied buildings in London and utterly unknown to most visitors, sitting quietly just across the river from the Houses of Parliament.
📺
The Southbank Centre & television studios The Southbank Centre — London’s great cultural hub — along with the television studios that have produced some of British broadcasting’s most iconic output. The showbiz heritage of this stretch of the Thames stretches all the way back to the Elizabethan pleasure gardens and has never really gone away.

The View That Monet Painted

Real London, away from the tourists — and the best views in the city

One of the great pleasures of this tour is that it takes you to parts of London that feel genuinely real and unloved by the tourist trail. Dipping away from the riverside into the side streets, you encounter the authentic character of a neighbourhood that still carries its history on its face — Victorian terraces, old pub fronts, traces of the industries that once lined this bank of the Thames.

And then back to the river — always the river — for those extraordinary panoramic views that artists and poets have celebrated for centuries. The tour finishes next to the Houses of Parliament, making it simple to continue into Westminster or wherever else the day takes you.

🎭 Pairs beautifully with our Charles Dickens Walking Tour for the complete south-of-the-river Dickensian experience — many of the same streets and stories connect the two tours.
