England’s Finest Stone Town
Midway between London and York — and one of England’s most beautiful secrets
Stamford sits quietly in the Lincolnshire/Northamptonshire borderlands, relatively unknown to most visitors to England despite being one of the most architecturally perfect towns in the entire country. Sir Walter Scott declared it “the finest stone town in England” — and with over 600 listed buildings built from gorgeous warm limestone, five spectacular medieval churches and streets of Georgian elegance that have barely changed in three centuries, it is difficult to argue.
It has been consistently voted among the best places to live in Britain, and its high street repeatedly named the best in the country. The only mystery about Stamford is why so few visitors ever find it. This completely private tour — just you and your guide — is a wonderful way to be introduced to a place that will stay with you long after you’ve gone home. A café stop is absolutely part of the programme and won’t eat into the tour time.

What We’ll Explore
Centuries of history woven into every street and stone
We’ll wander through the elegant shopping streets and quiet back alleys, discovering the stories of the people and events that created the beautiful, unspoilt Stamford we see today. We’ll visit the beautiful meadows by the River Welland, see the remains of Stamford Castle, and learn the extraordinary story behind the Eleanor Cross — erected by a grieving king at the funeral procession of his beloved queen.
This is a wholly unhurried, completely private experience — just you and your guide exploring at whatever pace suits you. Stamford rewards the curious and the unhurried, and there is always something new to discover in its alleyways and courtyards. And of course, among the historic churches and wonderful pubs, you might find a little culinary treat or two along the way.
