History in Every Glass

Stamford sat on the great coaching road between London and Edinburgh — and its ancient inns are still standing

For centuries, Stamford was one of the most important stops on the old coaching route between London, York, Newcastle and Edinburgh. Every traveller — from Georgian gentlemen to merchants, soldiers and royalty — would have broken their journey here, resting their horses and themselves in the remarkable collection of inns that lined these limestone streets.

Those inns are still here — still serving, still atmospheric, still full of character and stories. Our pub tour is the perfect way to discover this magnificent old town, weaving its history into each stop along the way. A drink is included at every pub, though of course it’s entirely optional — the stories are free either way.

🍺
A drink included at every pub Beer, real ale, cider or soft drink — your choice at each stop. Drinks are optional but very much encouraged.

The Lord Burghley, Stamford
Stop 3

The Lord Burghley

At the far end of Broad Street — a charming free house converted from an old house, with fantastic open fires, atmospheric rooms and a wide range of ales. Exactly what a Stamford pub should look like.

Melbourn Brothers brewery pub, Stamford
Stop 4

Melbourn Brothers & All Saints Brewery

Stamford has had a brewery for centuries — the current All Saints Brewery dates from 1825 and still uses antique steam equipment to craft organic handmade fruit beers. It would be almost rude not to try one.

The London Inn, Stamford
Final Stop

The London Inn

The grand finale — right in the heart of Stamford, just a few minutes from the station and the hotels. A perfect place to stay on for a meal, or simply to raise a final glass to a wonderful afternoon well spent.

🐂
Stop 1 The Bull & Swan — our first stop, straight from the station

A coaching inn since the early 17th century — snug, cosy, and serving a great collection of beers and real ales. Here you’ll hear the story of the eccentric 5th Earl of Exeter who drank here centuries ago. The perfect beginning.
