The Complete Rutland Experience
Better than the Cotswolds — and you’ll see exactly why
Rutland lives up to its motto — Multum in Parvo, much in little — more completely than almost anywhere else in England. This full day private tour takes you right across the county in the company of a guide who actually lives here, revealing not just the headline attractions but the scenic country lanes, hidden villages and unexpected history that lie between them.
We start in Oakham — the county town — before driving through the beautiful Rutland countryside to Rutland Water and the magical Normanton Church, then on to the remarkable market town of Uppingham. Along the way there will be a stop at a country pub or café, and depending on the season, optional visits to sites that make this tiny county endlessly surprising.
Oakham Castle Hall — hung with horseshoes gifted by visiting royalty
Normanton Church — one of the most photographed sights in the East Midlands
Rutland Water
The smallest county with the largest lake — and the most magical church
Despite being England’s smallest county, Rutland is home to its largest artificial lake — Rutland Water, a vast and beautiful reservoir that has become a haven for wildlife, sailors, cyclists and anyone who simply wants to stand and admire extraordinary views.
At the water’s edge sits Normanton Church — a 19th-century church that was saved from the rising waters when the reservoir was created and now stands on a small causeway, reflected in the lake. It is one of the most photographed and most loved sights in the whole of the Midlands, and never fails to stop visitors in their tracks.
“Personally I love the original pork pies and Stilton cheese — and a drive through Rutland’s villages between stops is one of my favourite things to share with visitors. The countryside here is genuinely stunning.”
— Stephen, your guide & Oakham resident
Uppingham & Beyond
A market town of extraordinary character — and optional extras that surprise
Uppingham is in some ways even more renowned than Oakham. As well as its Friday market, the town is home to an extraordinary range of speciality shops and traditional retailers — many still family owned and run — alongside art galleries, antique dealers, great old inns and excellent cafés. It is a town that rewards slow exploration.
Seasonal Optional Extras
St Peter & St Paul, Uppingham — at the heart of a remarkable market town
