A Thousand Years of Dark London

This tour takes you to real London — and it is not always pretty

This is not a tour of famous sights and grand architecture — though we pass a few along the way. This is a journey into the dark heart of London’s history, through the neighbourhoods and centuries where crime, punishment, corruption and extraordinary human cruelty shaped the city we see today. It spans a thousand years and crosses the whole of central London, from the East End to the South Bank.

From medieval witch trials and the agonising execution of William Wallace, through the public hangings of Newgate and the squalor of the Debtors’ Prison, to the brutal reign of the Kray twins in post-war East London — every stop on this tour has a story that will stay with you long after you’ve returned to your hotel.

🥃
The Krays — East End gangsters & Jack the Ripper’s Whitechapel We begin in the heart of the East End — one of the most notorious pubs where the Kray twins violently ruled the roost in post-WW2 Britain. Then back through time to 1888 and the streets where Jack the Ripper stalked his victims.
⚔️
Smithfield — William Wallace & centuries of bloody execution Smithfield has been a place of execution for centuries. We visit the shrine of William Wallace — Braveheart — put to death here in one of the most horrifying ways imaginable, and St Bartholomew the Great, London’s oldest church.
🏛️
Newgate Prison & the Old Bailey We stand on the spot where prisoners awaited trial and death for centuries at Newgate, then pass the Old Bailey — one of the oldest criminal courts in the world, where some of the most infamous trials in British history have been conducted.
⛓️
The Clink Prison, Borough Market & Dickens’ Debtors’ Prison Across the river to the notorious Clink on the South Bank — the prison that gave its name to a word still used today. Through the maze of alleys around Borough Market to the Debtors’ Prison that shaped the world of Charles Dickens in the most personal and devastating ways.

In the London of 1888 — no-one can hear you scream

From Gangsters to the Middle Ages

No other tour in London covers this much ground — in every sense

The genius of this tour is the span of it. In the space of three to four hours you travel from the 14th century to the 20th — from medieval torture and witch trials to 1960s organised crime — and all of it rooted in real places you can stand in and touch. The Clink still sits on Clink Street. Borough Market’s maze of alleys is barely changed. The sites of Newgate and the Old Bailey face each other as they always have.

For those who want to go even deeper into the Jack the Ripper story, our dedicated daytime Ripper tour visits every canonical murder scene and more — the natural companion to this walk.

“This tour takes you to real London — full of the history of murders, dark deeds by criminals and often even more horrendous tortures and executions by the State. From the medieval to the modern, it is a walk through a city that has never been entirely civilised.”
