The village of Walsingham in Norfolk has been considered a holy place for more than 1,000 years. It was here, in 1061, that the Virgin Mary reportedly appeared to a noblewoman named Richeldis and instructed that a replica of the house of Jesus in the Holy Land be built on this very spot.
At the height of its fame, Walsingham was one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in all of Europe — ranking alongside Rome, Santiago de Compostela and Canterbury.
