The Discovery That Stunned the World
“A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse!” — and for 527 years, nobody knew where he lay
In 2012, archaeologists made one of the most extraordinary discoveries in British history — the remains of King Richard III, the last Plantagenet king, buried beneath an ordinary Leicester car park. He had lain there undisturbed for 527 years since his death at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485.
In 2015, Richard was reinterred in magnificent Leicester Cathedral in a ceremony attended by members of the Royal Family and descendants of those who fought alongside him at Bosworth. His magnificent tomb — and the city that has embraced his story so completely — is now one of England’s most compelling destinations.

Much More Besides
Two thousand years of history on foot through a living city
Leicester’s story stretches far beyond Richard III. The city played a dramatic role in the English Civil War — the castle earthworks and Parliamentary loopholes cut into old walls tell the story of a siege in 1645. We’ll explore the graceful Georgian streets whose prosperity was built on hosiery, footwear and engineering, and see the famous Victorian clock tower at the city’s heart.
If time and energy permit, a 20–30 minute walk brings us to the beautiful Abbey Park — and the burial site of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, one of the most powerful men in Tudor England, who died in disgrace in Leicester in 1530. Arguably as significant a figure as Richard III himself.
