A cathedral forged by Vikings, Normans and queens
Just a few minutes’ walk from Peterborough Station lies one of England’s most extraordinary cathedrals — and one of its most underrated. We begin in the large Cathedral Square, dominated by the wonderful old Guildhall built in 1671, still home to a regular farmers’ market, before heading to the cathedral itself.
The site was originally Roman, then became a great monastic community in the 7th century — before being spectacularly destroyed by the Great Heathen Viking Army under the magnificently named Ivar the Boneless. The Norman cathedral that replaced it is a breathtaking building, and inside we’ll visit the tomb of Katherine of Aragon — Henry VIII’s first queen, who died insisting she was the rightful Queen of England.

One of the greatest houses of Elizabethan England — as seen in The Crown
Just 15 minutes from Peterborough by car, Burghley House is one of the largest and grandest surviving houses of the sixteenth century — amongst the very finest examples of Elizabethan architecture anywhere in the world. It was conceived by William Cecil, Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I, and built between 1555 and 1587. Sixteen generations of the Cecil family have called it home.
Known worldwide for the Burghley Horse Trials, and featured prominently in numerous major television productions including The Crown, Burghley is a house of extraordinary scale, ambition and beauty. Walking through it, you can only begin to imagine the power and vision of the man who built it.
We explore the full house — from the Downstairs where those in service worked (as seen in Downton Abbey), to the magnificent state rooms above, richly decorated with priceless works of art and centuries of accumulated grandeur.
