Norman cathedral · Katherine of Aragon’s tomb · Guildhall & cathedral square · Ivar the Boneless
600+ listed buildings · finest Georgian streets · 5 medieval churches · Britain’s best high street
Norman castle · royal horseshoes · market square with original stocks · pork pies & Stilton
All three are connected by short train hops of 10–15 minutes. Pick any two for a relaxed half-day tour, or combine all three for a truly epic full day of English market town perfection.
Cathedral, Vikings & a queen’s tomb
Just a few minutes from the station lies the magnificent Cathedral Square and the 1671 Guildhall, then the truly breathtaking Peterborough Cathedral itself. Originally a Roman site, it became a great monastery before being destroyed by the Great Heathen Army under the magnificently named Ivar the Boneless — and rebuilt by the Normans into one of England’s finest cathedrals.
Inside we visit the tomb of Katherine of Aragon — Henry VIII’s first queen, who died insisting she was the rightful Queen of England. A profoundly moving and historically extraordinary place.

England’s finest Georgian town — a hidden gem hiding in plain sight
Just 10–15 minutes by train from Peterborough, Stamford is one of those towns that makes you wonder why the whole country isn’t talking about it. With over 600 listed buildings in gorgeous Lincolnshire limestone — including five spectacular medieval churches — it is regularly voted among the best places to live in Britain and home to what many consider the finest high street in the country.
For those who know its secret, it is a hidden gem. Our private walking tour shows you every corner of it — the narrow alleyways, hidden courtyards, specialist shops and the extraordinary streetscapes that have made it a favourite film and television location for decades.
Rutland’s county capital — small, perfectly formed, and full of surprises
Oakham is the county town of Rutland — England’s smallest and arguably most charming county — and it packs a remarkable amount into a small space. A Norman castle hung with royal horseshoes. A beautiful 13th-century church. A market square with its ancient Buttercross and original stocks. And an independent high street renowned for its butchers, bakers and cheesemongers.
The pork pies and Stilton cheese here are genuinely world-class — do not leave without trying both. And if you can combine all three destinations, Oakham and Stamford are just 25 minutes apart by train through the most beautiful Rutland countryside.
💡 Combine all three for just +£20 per person — the most rewarding day out in the East Midlands.

Alternatively you might want to visit the beautiful market town of Oakham. It is the county town of Rutland which is just few miles eastwards. Indeed we can combined all three to make a truly memorable day before getting the train back to Peterborough and onwards from there. Oakham might be small but it has a castle, beautiful church, old market square and even some stocks. Alternatively explore some of the little lanes and charming pubs.
