England’s Most Underrated City

Like York or Canterbury β€” but one of Britain’s best-kept secrets

Lincoln is one of those cities that stops you in your tracks. Dramatically positioned on a hilltop above the surrounding Lincolnshire plain, its skyline is dominated by one of the greatest medieval cathedrals in Europe β€” a building that was once the tallest structure on earth. Below it sits a Norman castle built by William the Conqueror in 1066, containing one of only four surviving original copies of the Magna Carta.

Between the cathedral and the castle runs Steep Hill β€” one of the most characterful shopping streets in England, lined with independent shops, galleries and cafΓ©s in buildings that span a thousand years of history. Lincoln rewards the curious and the unhurried, and our private tour β€” five to six hours, entirely at your own pace β€” is the perfect way to discover it.

The Cathedral & the Castle

Side by side on the hill β€” 1,000 years of history in two extraordinary buildings

After climbing Steep Hill β€” pausing to catch our breath and browse the wonderful independent shops along the way β€” we arrive at the cathedral close. Lincoln Cathedral, built in 1078 and remodelled after a tremendous earthquake in the following century, is the undisputed star of the city. One of the finest and largest medieval cathedrals in all of Europe, its spire still stands 520 feet (160 metres) tall.

From the cathedral we move to Lincoln Castle β€” built by William the Conqueror in 1066, the same year as so many other Norman fortresses across England. But Lincoln’s castle has a trump card: inside, you can see one of only four original copies of the Magna Carta β€” the 1215 document that shaped the course of democracy and the rule of law across the world.

The castle towers, Victorian prison and medieval walls are all explorable β€” it’s all rather Game of Thrones. But better, because it’s real.
