The Treasures of Tyneside

Lesser visited. Completely unforgettable.

This very special private tour takes you to some of the most impressive yet often overlooked historical monuments in the North East. Hard to reach on your own, our guide brings them all to life in a single extraordinary day.

Stop 1

Tynemouth Priory & Castle

A short drive from Newcastle brings you to the beautiful coastal town of Tynemouth. The Priory and Castle sit on a dramatic headland with sweeping views over the North Sea — a site of Christian worship and military defence stretching back over a thousand years.

We’ll also pay our respects at the monument to Admiral Collingwood, Nelson’s second-in-command at Trafalgar and a proud Geordie.

Stop 2

The Angel of the North

En route we stop at Jarrow — once one of the most important Christian sites in the British Isles, now a picturesque church and home to the legacy of the Venerable Bede.

Then comes the centrepiece: the Angel of the North. The most viewed public artwork in Europe and the proud symbol of Tyneside, Antony Gormley’s towering figure stands 20 metres tall with wings the width of a jumbo jet. Nothing quite prepares you for standing beneath it.

Stop 3

Washington Old Hall

The perfect finale — Washington Old Hall, the ancestral home of George Washington’s family, in the real original Washington (yes, the American one is named after this place!). Original artefacts, family portraits, and beautiful gardens make this one of the most evocative houses in the North East.

Particularly popular with American visitors, but a fascinating and moving experience for everyone.
