The City That Surprises Everyone

Romans, Vikings, Scots — and the most beautiful street in Britain

Newcastle Upon Tyne is the last great English city before the Scottish border — and it is genuinely extraordinary. Its heritage carries the imprint of Romans, marauding Vikings and invading Scots, and that layered history is visible everywhere you look. Once famous for coal, shipbuilding and heavy industry, it has been transformed over recent decades into one of the most celebrated weekend destinations in Britain.

Our walking tour takes in the famous quayside, the cathedrals, medieval walls, Roman remains and Georgian streets that more than match those of Edinburgh or Bath. Newcastle even boasts the street voted the most beautiful urban street in the whole of Great Britain.

🌉
The Tyne Bridge — visitors from Sydney will recognise it! Newcastle’s iconic bridge bears a striking resemblance to the Sydney Harbour Bridge — and for good reason. Both were built by the same company, at almost the same time.
🏛️
Grey Street — voted Britain’s most beautiful urban street Grey’s Monument stands at the top of this magnificent curved Georgian street — architecture that genuinely rivals the finest streets in Edinburgh or Bath.
The Quayside, cathedrals & medieval walls The famous quayside stretches along the Tyne beneath the bridges. Nearby, cathedrals, medieval walls and Roman remains tell 2,000 years of continuous history.
😊
The friendliest city in Britain Geordies are renowned throughout the world for their warmth and humour. Every visitor to Newcastle says the same thing — they wish they’d come sooner.
