Our first video tour beyond London

St Albans is extraordinary. Founded by the Romans as Verulamium in the 1st century AD, it became the site of Britain’s first Christian martyrdom in around 250 AD, grew into one of the great medieval pilgrimage cities of England, and today remains a beautiful small cathedral city of Tudor streets, Georgian houses, and astonishing history — all just 25 minutes by train from central London.

This is our first video tour outside of London, filmed in full 360° so you can look around wherever you like as the tour plays. In just over an hour, we’ll walk you through 2,000 years of British history in one of the most remarkable small cities in Europe.

“Few cities pack so much history into such a small area. Roman ruins, Anglo-Saxon saints, medieval pilgrimage, Tudor timber, King Arthur legends — and all easily visitable in a single afternoon.”

The Journey

Nine stops through 2,000 years of British history.

1

Roman Verulamium

Begin among the Roman ruins in Verulamium Park — the remains of what was once one of the largest Roman cities in Britain.

2

An Anglo-Saxon Church

Visit a fine old Anglo-Saxon church with the grave of a very famous person in its grounds — one of the hidden treasures of the city.

3

The Ancient Gatehouse

Climb the hill to the great medieval gatehouse that was famously placed under siege during the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381.

4

St Albans Cathedral

Step inside one of the most magnificent religious buildings in Europe — with its astonishing Norman tower and medieval wall paintings.

5

Shrine of St Alban

Visit the shrine of Alban — Britain’s first Christian martyr, who died here around 250 AD. One of the holiest sites in English Christianity.

6

The Second Ancient Shrine

Inside the cathedral, we’ll visit a second extraordinary ancient shrine — a hidden wonder most visitors walk right past.

7

Medieval Clock Tower

See Britain’s only remaining medieval free-standing clock tower — extraordinary that it survived the centuries.

8

Tudor & Georgian Streets

Wander the beautiful ancient lanes and alleys of St Albans, full of timber-framed Tudor buildings and elegant Georgian houses.

9

The Holy Well & King Arthur

Finish at the magical Holy Well — connected both to St Alban’s martyrdom and, according to legend, to King Arthur himself.

2,000 years of history in 64 minutes

This is one of those rare places where the whole story of England can be told in a single walk. From Roman conquest to Anglo-Saxon saints, medieval pilgrimage to the Peasants’ Revolt, from the Tudor era to Arthurian legend — St Albans has seen it all, and the layers are still visible in its streets.

Filmed in full 360° video, with Stephen’s expert commentary overlaid, this is the closest you can get to visiting without being there in person — and at £10 for over an hour’s tour, an extraordinary amount of history for the price.
