One of England’s Most Unique Cities

From Vikings to Robin Hood to the Industrial Revolution — Nottingham’s story is extraordinary

Nottingham is one of England’s most layered and fascinating cities — a place where Robin Hood, medieval castles, ancient underground caves, lacemaking heritage and the industrial revolution all collide. It sits at the very heart of England, easily reached by direct train from London, Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool.

Nottingham is home to the largest public square in the United Kingdom, a rich history of lacemaking and the industrial revolution, legendary football, and one of the greatest concentrations of underground cave systems of any city in Europe. Our private walking tour weaves together all the best of it — above ground and below.

🏰
Nottingham Castle — home of the Sheriff Robin Hood’s legendary nemesis had his headquarters here. Entry included — and far fewer sword fights than 900 years ago.
🕳️
The City of Caves — nearly 1,000 beneath the streets One of the most remarkable underground networks in Europe, carved from sandstone, some used as WW2 air-raid shelters. Entry included.
🧵
The Lace Market & industrial heritage Nottingham’s lacemaking history shaped the city — the Victorian Lace Market quarter is one of the finest industrial heritage districts in England.
🍺
Ends at Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem — 1189AD Built into the castle rock itself, frequented by Crusaders heading to the Holy Land. The finest possible way to end a tour of Nottingham.

All Things Robin Hood

Following in the footsteps of England’s most enduring legend

There is one figure who epitomises Nottingham above all else, and we follow hot on his heels to the key locations across the city that are pivotal to his story. First stop: Nottingham Castle, home of Robin’s nemesis the Sheriff of Nottingham — dramatically positioned on a sandstone cliff above the city.

It is considerably quieter here now than it was 900 years ago, and with a bit of luck we normally get a good look around inside the castle without too many sword fights or any unpleasant encounters with Sir Guy of Gisburne. (Though perhaps I should offer that as an optional extra.)

A good spot to conclude our Nottingham Private Walking Tour

After the tour Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem is right there — built into the rock beneath the castle in 1189, frequented by Crusaders, and still serving. It is the perfect place to raise a glass to an extraordinary day.
