Stamford β “the finest stone town in England”
We begin in glorious Stamford β a town so architecturally perfect that Sir Walter Scott declared it the finest stone town in England. With over 600 listed buildings of gorgeous warm limestone, five spectacular medieval churches, and streets of Georgian elegance that have barely changed in three centuries, it is difficult to argue with him.
Consistently voted among the best places to live in Britain, with the country’s finest high street, Stamford is a hidden gem whose secret is kept by those lucky enough to know it. We’ll spend the morning exploring its beautiful streets, alleyways, riverside meadows and remarkable churches β three unhurried hours to fall properly in love with the place.

Burghley House β one of England’s greatest Elizabethan palaces
Burghley House β built by the most powerful man in Elizabethan England
A very short drive from Stamford brings us to Burghley House β one of the largest and grandest surviving houses of the sixteenth century, and amongst the finest examples of the great Elizabethan houses anywhere in England. It was conceived by William Cecil, Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I herself, and built between 1555 and 1587.
Known worldwide for its famous Horse Trials, and featured in countless films and television productions, Burghley is a house of extraordinary grandeur. We’ll explore it fully β downstairs to see how the household staff lived (familiar to fans of Downton Abbey), then upstairs through the magnificent state rooms, corridors and galleries richly decorated with some of the finest works of art in private ownership.
