The Magnificent Seven & Beyond

Some of the most incredible cemeteries in the world — and the extraordinary people buried in them

London’s Victorian cemeteries are world-class — genuinely among the most beautiful, gothic and architecturally extraordinary burial grounds anywhere on Earth. Built to address the catastrophic overcrowding of London’s churchyards during the industrial revolution, the Magnificent Seven cemeteries were designed to be as much parks and places of reflection for the living as resting places for the dead. This tour visits the best of them — and tells the stories of who lies within.

The Standard Tour takes in four magnificent cemeteries in four hours. The Extended Tour adds Highgate East and West — the most famous of all, and a full day’s journey through the lives and deaths of the people who built the modern world.

🏛️
Brompton — Dr John Snow, Emmeline Pankhurst & the only known Time Machine Dr John Snow who cracked cholera. Emmeline Pankhurst who won women the vote. Architecture inspired by the Vatican and ancient Egypt. And — uniquely — what is possibly the only known Time Machine in the world. Brompton alone is worth the entire tour.
💻
Kensal Green — Charles Babbage, Marigold Churchill & Harold Pinter Over a mile in length, with 205,000+ burials, Kensal Green is as much a nature reserve as a cemetery — overgrown, gothic and magnificent. Charles Babbage, the Victorian computer pioneer. Little Marigold Churchill, Churchill’s daughter who died in infancy. Harold Pinter. And grand royal tombs alongside the simplest of graves.
Bunhill Fields & St Pancras Old Church Cemetery Bunhill Fields — the great Nonconformist burial ground where 70,000 people are tightly buried together, including John Bunyan, Daniel Defoe and William Blake. St Pancras Old Church — one of the oldest Christian sites in England, with a history stretching back to the Roman period.
🧛
Highgate East & West — Extended Tour only The most famous cemetery in London — and one of the most famous in the world. Karl Marx. George Eliot. Michael Faraday. The Egyptian Avenue, the Circle of Lebanon, the catacombs. Highgate West in particular is one of the great gothic masterpieces of Victorian architecture.

More Than Just Graves

A tour through the lives of the people who made the modern world

This is not a morbid tour — it is a joyful one. The cemeteries of London are extraordinary places of beauty, wildlife, history and quiet contemplation. To walk through Kensal Green or Highgate is to walk through the full sweep of Victorian Britain — its inventors, its writers, its reformers and its royals, all in one extraordinary landscape.

The architecture alone is worth the visit — from Egyptian revival gateways to grand mausoleums modelled on the Vatican, from simple Quaker graves to the spectacular catacombs of Highgate West. These are genuinely among the greatest Victorian achievements in London.

⏰ Choose your experience — the Standard 4-hour tour covers four magnificent cemeteries. The Extended 6-hour tour adds Highgate East and West for the complete experience.
