Peterborough might not be the first place you’d think of β€” and that’s exactly why you should go

Just 45 minutes from London on the East Coast Main Line, and just a few minutes’ walk from the station, lies one of the most historically extraordinary cathedral cities in England. Peterborough is frequently overlooked β€” and that means it remains genuinely unspoilt, unhurried and all the more rewarding for those who make the effort to explore it properly.

The large city square is anchored by the wonderful old Guildhall, built in 1671 and still serving as the heart of local civic life β€” a farmers’ market is still held here regularly, alongside many other events throughout the year.

Peterborough Cathedral β€” Norman magnificence on a site of 1,400 years of worship

From Rome to the Normans

Fourteen hundred years of history β€” shaped by Romans, Vikings and kings

The site of Peterborough Cathedral was originally Roman, and in the 7th century became the heart of a monastic community β€” one of the great early Christian settlements of England. That community was spectacularly and violently ended when the Great Heathen Army, led by the magnificently named Ivar the Boneless, swept through and destroyed it.

What you see today was built after the Norman Conquest β€” and it is genuinely breathtaking. The cathedral’s Early English west front is one of the most dramatic architectural statements in the country, and the interior is equally magnificent. We explore it in full on the tour.

πŸ‘‘ Katherine of Aragon β€” buried here since 1536

Henry VIII’s first wife β€” the Queen who refused to accept the annulment of her marriage and died insisting she was the true Queen of England β€” is buried here in a tomb that remains a place of pilgrimage to this day. Visitors still lay pomegranates, her personal symbol, on the tomb.
