Stamford — England’s finest Georgian town
Perhaps the finest Georgian-era town in Britain and the most beautiful town on the old coaching road between London and Edinburgh. You may not have visited before, but you’ll likely recognise it from its many appearances on screen — Stamford has stood in for countless period dramas over the decades.
We’ll spend around three hours exploring the gorgeous streets — narrow alleyways and hidden courtyards home to speciality shops, fine jewellers and boutiques, a Friday market and a buzzing High Street. Along the way we’ll pop into one of the incredible medieval churches, and perhaps a divine café or a historic pub. It is a wholly unhurried morning with stories at every turn.
Stamford — “the finest stone town in England”
Then a 10-minute train hop takes us to Oakham — included in your tour price
Oakham Castle Hall — virtually unique in England
Oakham — county town of England’s smallest and most charming county
Oakham is the county town of Rutland — England’s smallest county — and a place with a well-deserved reputation for extraordinary food, artisan shops and a warmly independent character. It is everything a great English market town should be.
The must-see highlight for many is Oakham Castle — virtually unique in England — and the beautiful market square with its centuries-old Buttercross, complete with original stocks where miscreants would have been pelted with rotten fruit. Nearby stands the impressive Grade I listed All Saints Church, very nearly at the geographical centre of the town.
If you don’t try the local delicacies — particularly the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie and Stilton Cheese — it is almost a crime. And be warned: Oakham has the only surviving Short Drop Gallows in the country. Though we can assure you the worst that will happen to you is an excellent lunch.

Optional extra: Normanton Church at Rutland Water — just 15 minutes away
Just 15 minutes from Oakham by car — the enchanting 18th-century Normanton Church sits right at the water’s edge of Rutland Water, the largest artificial lake in England. A truly beautiful and unusual sight. Ask us to include it when you book.
