Rutland is England’s smallest and some might say its prettiest county. One thing is for certain, Rutland lives up to its motto. Multum in Parvo or ‘much in little’. In this private Roaming Rutland Tour you will see want this beautiful little place has to offer.
One thing you won’t help but notice is the beautiful rolling countryside in Rutland which combined with its perfect picturesque villages has been labelled the new Cotswolds we will find out why.
Oakham – The County Town
We will start off in the county town of Oakham. The picture postcard market town is home to a select 10,000 people (including myself). Oakham offers a great range of things to do and see. There are some incredible local craft shops, cafes, bakers and butchers. Personally I love the original pork pies and stilton cheese).

Visit to Oakham Castle with its unique Great Hall and the beautiful All Saints Church. Oakham has a beautiful old Buttermarket and stocks in the market square and its high street is brimming with independent butchers, bakers, cheesemongers, artisan shops and some lovely cafes and pubs.
Then we will go off on a drive through the country and see some of the scenic views and gorgeous villages, some with some unexpected history within.
Despite being the smallest county, we have the largest manmade lake in the country. Rutland Water is a haven for wildlife and those of us who just want to admire the views and experience the tranquility.

Next up we will head to the other market town in Rutland. Uppingham which is in some ways even more renowned than Oakham. As well as its Friday market Uppingham is home to a range of speciality shops and traditional retailers, many of whom are still family owned and run.
Uppingham is a centre for art and antiques with something around every corner as well as bursting with great old inns and cafes.

Outside the winter months we can go to Lyddington Bede House, part of the former palace of the Bishop of Lincoln as seen below.

Or perhaps something totally different like Borough Hill Iron Age Fort. At 690 feet (210 metres) it offers incredible views of the surrounding counties.

There will no doubt be time for a stop at a country pub, cafe or whatever takes your fancy.
