Your private walking tour of Newcastle begins wherever is most convenient for you — your city-centre hotel, a Metro station, or directly at Newcastle Central Station. From there, we step straight into the heart of the city. Because this is a completely private tour, everything is tailored to you: the route, the pace, and the focus. If you’d like to pause for a coffee, a drink, or simply to soak up the atmosphere, just say so. My guiding philosophy is simple — this is a relaxed experience, as if we’re exploring together as friends or family, never rushed and never scripted.

See the famous sights and explore the back streets
Newcastle was once synonymous with coal mining, shipbuilding, and industrial power. Today, “The Toon” has reinvented itself as one of Britain’s most exciting and welcoming city destinations, celebrated worldwide for its dramatic bridges, striking architecture, vibrant nightlife, and famously friendly locals. It’s a city with a proud past and a dynamic present — and the stories bring it to life.
Our walk takes in the iconic Quayside and its magnificent bridges, along with cathedrals, medieval town walls, and the castle that gave the city its name. You’ll discover Roman remains, hear how Scottish forces once besieged the town and breached its defences, and stroll through elegant Georgian streets that rival those of Bath or Edinburgh. In fact, Newcastle is home to the street voted the most beautiful urban street in Great Britain.

See the famous sights and explore the back streets
We’ll explore the lively Grainger Market. Wander through the stunning Central Arcade. Stop for photographs beside the statue of Martin Luther King who visited Newcastle’s world-leading university. No visit is complete without seeing St James’ Park! Often affectionately called the “third cathedral of the Toon”. We’ll then continuing into Chinatown and Blackfriars, home to England’s oldest dining hall.

If you wish, the tour can also be extended to include the spectacular Angel of the North — the most viewed public artwork in Europe and the world’s largest angel — or a visit to beautiful Tynemouth, with its priory, castle, and sweeping coastline.
I’ve been a private guide since founding Ye Olde England Tours in 2012, and I’d be delighted to show you what I believe is the friendliest (and best!) city in the world.
