Like most of our tours, Sherwood: Myths, magic and murder! is totally unique. It gives you a chance to see a medley of special places that you’d likely never get to see. Meeting you at either of the Newark on Trent Railway Stations before a short drive through Sherwood Forest will take us to Cresswell Crags.
Cresswell Crags – putting the magic into our Sherwood: Myths, magic and murder! tour.
We start our Sherwood: Myths, magic and murder! at Creswell Crags. A gorge with 60,000 years of history inside. What we are really here to see though are some stoneage cave carvings that was made around 13,500 years ago in the last ice-age.

A few minutes walk away is another cave with an altogether more foreboding atmosphere. Apotropaic carvings or ritual protection marks, often known as witch marks. There are hundreds of them here made by people centuries ago to ward off evil. Spending a time in these caverns its easy to imagine how terrifying it was.

The Major Oak – Sherwood Forest
A short drive from the Creswell Crags is the Major Oak. This ancient Oak tree that has assumed legendary status in all things Robin Hood. It’s a 10 minute walk through Sherwood Forest to see one of the most famous trees on the planet. Until not too long ago people were allowed right up to touch! Thankfully it is now protected in its extreme old age which also makes it much easier to enjoy and photograph its majesty.

A short walk away is St Mary’s Church Edwinstowe which is said by many to be the church where Robin Hood and Lady Marian were married. The Church isn’t always open but it’s always worth checking out.
Newark Castle and ‘Bad’ King John
From here it is back to Newark which also has Robin Hood links as it is here where bad King John died in Newark Castle. The Castle itself is just a ruin now due to Newarks starring role in the English Civil War. However the view of its walls beside the river is a sight to behold.
Newark is a lovely old historic Market Town and we will set off down the streets to see the large market square and fantastic church. You can still see the damage high up in the tower from when it was struck by a cannon ball in the Civil War.
Newark is also full of pubs and restaurants and if you have time before getting the train back, you could easily find somewhere to spend an hour or two and enjoy the unhurried atmosphere or look out for a bargain in one of Newarks famed antique shops.
