York was founded all the way back in 71AD and was once the Northern capital of Britannia. It’s long and often violent history later saw it as a key city in the kingdom of Northumbria before becoming Viking Jorvik.
Get lost in the famous Shambles
In this private guided walk we will walk through the narrow Snickleways and the world famous medieval maze of streets known as The Shambles. Then we will visit Clifford Tower, one of the central parts of York Castle built by William The Conquerer after the plucky locals rebelled and site of a terrible massacre.
We will visit the grave of one of the most famous criminals in the history of York, Dick Turpin the Highwayman and walk along a stretch of the old city walls before stopping for lunch in any one of a number of atmospheric old pubs.
In the afternoon we will visit York Minster, the largest gothic cathedral in Northern Europe whose wonderful history and architecture above ground are matched by the fantastic holy treasures kept in the museum beneath this great building.
