Londinium — Founded AD 47
Two thousand years of history — hiding beneath the modern city
Most of Roman London lies 23 feet — seven metres — below the streets you’re walking on. It survived the Great Fire of 1666, the Blitz of WW2, and two thousand years of continuous rebuilding. And if you know exactly where to look, you can still see it, touch it, and stand inside it. That knowledge is what this private four-hour tour offers.
This is an Indiana Jones adventure in the middle of one of the world’s great cities. We go completely off the beaten tourist track — away from the West End and into the original Londinium, the City of London as it was founded by the Romans nearly two thousand years ago. Into crypts, under office towers, along the line of the ancient city wall. Places that even most Londoners never get to explore.

Places that even most Londoners never get to explore
What makes this tour so special is not just the age of what you’re seeing — it is the inaccessibility of it. These are not museum exhibits behind glass. These are the actual Roman structures, still in situ, still in the ground beneath the modern city. Some are in office basements. Some are in church crypts. Some are simply embedded into the fabric of buildings that nobody looks twice at.
The Roman city wall that once enclosed the entire city. The amphitheatre beneath the Guildhall. The Temple of Mithras now restored to its exact original position under a glass floor in a modern bank. The floor of a Roman house in a crypt. Two thousand years of survival — against fire, flood, war and the relentless rebuilding of a living city.
🏛️ They might not be the most complete Roman buildings in the world — but the fact that they survived at all, hidden beneath one of the world’s busiest cities, makes them more extraordinary than almost anything you’ll find in Rome itself.

“Much of Roman London is now 23 feet underground — but if you know where to look, you can still see Roman structures that have survived 2,000 years of construction, great fires, bombs and wars. This tour finds every one of them.”
