Stamford Pub Tour

The beautiful town of Stamford is on the old coaching route between London, York, Newcastle and Edinburgh. As such Stamford is the natural home for some wonderfully characterful pubs and inns. They’d have been a hive of activity in days gone by but now possess a more leisurely air.

Today Stamford is said to be the finest stone city in Britain, there are less horse and carts and more ambling visitors and shoppers exploring all the nooks and crannies.

Our pub tour is a great alternative way to see this marvellous old town whilst learning its history as we visit some of its most historic old pubs with a drink included in each one (drinks not compulsory).

The Pubs

Stamford Pub Tour

If we meet at the station then the first place we will stop off at is the Bull and Swan which became an old coaching inn early in the 17th Century. It is snug, cosy and serves a great collection of beers and real ales. Here you will learn about the eccentric 5th Earl of Exeter who drank here centuries ago.

Next up we will be walking over the old bridge across the river before making our way through the heart of the old retail area of Stamford, full of lanes of independent shops before happening across the Kings Head which has a selection of drinks to match its great appearance.

A few minutes away at the far end of Broad Street is the rather charming Free House, The Lord Burghley. Perhaps unsurprisingly going by its outside appearance, this old pub used to be a regular old house before being converted into a large pub. Inside are some fantastic open fires and atmospheric rooms to sample their wide range of ales.

Stamford has had a brewery for centuries though the present All Saints Brewery was set up in 1825. It still uses antique steam brewing equipment at to make a range of organic handcrafted fruit beers. It would almost seem rude not to sample their fruit beers at the adjoining Melbourn Brosthers pub.

Stamford Pub Tour

We finish off out our Pub tour at the grand old London Inn, right in the heart of Stamford. A great place if you want to stay on and after something to eat but also just a few minutes walk from hotels and Stamford Railway Station.

Departure Time: Midday

Location: Stamford
Duration of Tour: 4 hours Approx

Meeting Point: Stamford Railway Station for those arriving from London (about 40 minutes to Peterborough then 12 to Stamford) or elsewhere. Otherwise we can meet you at your hotel in Stamford, Oakham or mutually convenient location. I will make sure you get back to the station after the tour or somewhere central in Stamford for a nice meal or (another) drink.
