Thomas Cromwell Launde Abbey & ‘Royal’ Melton Mowbray

Thomas Cromwell liked Launde Abbey so much that he wanted to spend the rest of his days here. Nestled in the most beautiful peaceful countryside, he thought it the closest thing to heaven on earth. This is your chance to see if you agree.

Launde Abbey is only a few miles from Oakham and Melton Mowbray but is as secluded as you can ever imagine. Now a Nunnery, we are allowed to explore some of its beautify estate and old Walled Garden.

If you’re happy to attend the small service at Midday, we can visit the old chapel in which is Cromwells son, Gregory Cromwell is buried having done what his illustrious father failed to do and lived at Launde Abbey for a number of years.

Afterwards we make the 15 minute or so journey to the historic market town of Melton Mowbray – the rural capital of food! Here we will explore some of the most historic streets and lanes.

We’ll finally end the tour in the fabulous Anne of Cleeves pub, one time home of Thomas Cromwell with a free drink included. Of course you’re welcome to stay on and have a delicious meal here or hunt down some fabulous original Melton Mowbray Pork Pies and Stilton Cheese.
