This tour is great for anyone making a day trip from London. We would meet you outside Peterborough Station (45 minutes from London) or indeed from anywhere else you might be travelling.
Whilst Peterborough might not be the first place you’d think of visiting, just a few minutes walk from the railway station is the historic centre of the city.

In the middle of the large city square is the wonderful old Guildhall. Built originally in 1671 it has served as both a market and a townhall. A farmers market is still held here regularly along with many over events in the square.
A short stroll away is the really rather wonderful Peterborough Cathedral which we shall explore inside.

Though the site of Peterborough Cathedral was originally Roman, in the 7th century it became a monastic community though that was all but destroyed by the Great Heathen army under the splendidly named Ivar the Boneless. The current Peterborough Cathedral was built after the Norman conquest. Two queens were buried here including Katherine of Aragon whose tomb we will visit.

From here we will get the train just 10 or 15 minutes to one of the most beautiful market towns in Britain, Stamford. With over 600 listed buildings of gorgeous limestone including five of the most spectacular medieval churches anyway it is perhaps not a surprise that it is often voted amongst the best places to live and also home to best high street in Britain. The only thing that is surprising about Stamford is why so many never get to visit. For those who know its secret, it’s a hidden gem. Let Ye Olde England Tours show it to you in our private walking tour.

Alternatively you might want to visit the beautiful market town of Oakham. It is the county town of Rutland which is just few miles eastwards. Indeed we can combined all three to make a truly memorable day before getting the train back to Peterborough and onwards from there. Oakham might be small but it has a castle, beautiful church, old market square and even some stocks. Alternatively explore some of the little lanes and charming pubs.
