Tips for Green Tourism in London
London is one of the world’s great cities — and one of the greenest. Here’s how to be a brilliant, responsible guest while you’re here.
Our Commitment
London is working hard to become greener — and we’ve been part of that from the start
Ye Olde England Tours are proud to be Green Tourism certified — and we genuinely mean it. Our walking tours are themselves one of the most sustainable ways to explore a city: no vehicles, no emissions, just good conversation and great stories on foot.
If you’d like to be a good guest during your visit to London, here are a few simple tips that make a real difference. And one fun fact to start: London is actually far less rainy than its reputation suggests — it receives less annual rain than Paris, New York, Rome, Istanbul and Dallas. So please be mindful of that precious water!

How You Can Help
Four simple ways to be a brilliant, responsible visitor
Mind the Water
London tap water is perfectly drinkable — as it is everywhere in the UK. If you like to carry a drink, use a reusable bottle rather than single-use plastic. There are free water fountains throughout the city, and a handy website and app to help you find them.
Reusable bottleUse Public Transport
Most Londoners don’t drive in the city — and neither should you. The electric bus network and the Underground (running up to every minute at peak times) are quicker, cheaper and far better for the planet. Get an Oyster Card, or tap your contactless bank card directly. Visit tfl.gov.uk for maps, journey planning and live updates.
Oyster CardHire a Santander Bike
London is the world’s first National Park City — and central London is almost completely flat, making it brilliant for cycling. Santander Bike docking stations are dotted for miles across the centre. Use them to explore the parks, rivers, canals and forests that make London so extraordinary.
National Park CitySupport Local & Independent
When you see a familiar chain name, try something London instead — that’s why you came! You’re rarely more than a few minutes’ walk from somewhere quirky, unique and wonderful. Your money goes directly to local families and producers, the owners will treat you like a real guest, and you’ll get a far more memorable experience than any chain could offer.
Shop localKeep London Beautiful
London is an incredibly clean city for its size — hardly any graffiti or litter. Discarding rubbish on the street carries a £100 fine, so just carry it to the nearest bin and help Keep Britain Tidy.
And of course, one of the greenest ways to see London is on foot with a knowledgeable guide — no buses, no coaches, no emissions. Just stories, streets and a great day out.
