London’s Millennia of Progress: A Medical History – Bodysnatchers to Vaccines!

Nowhere in the world has been quite so important in the field of medicine than London. Historically if only for its long history filled with disasters and diseases but in the last few centuries it has also been the home of science and some of the most incredible jumps in medicine and healthcare anywhere on Earth.

This tour will visit plenty of sites that have helped change the world as well as visiting some of the spots that were home to some of the countless medical and social problems in history. In many ways, this tour isn’t just a Medical History Tour but also a fabulous alternative tour of London.

It’s hard to list all the places we will visit but just some of the spots include where Dr John Snow famously deduced that Cholera was spread through the water system, where Florence Nightingale once worked, the oldest surviving operating theatre and learn the story behind the establishment of the Foundling Hospital for abandoned children.

We will visit Alms Houses, ruins of medieval hospitals, visit the lanes where the Plague first spread through London and a plague pit too. Stand on the spot of the pioneering hospitals whose name is synonymous with ‘crazy’ goings on… Bedlam!

See the spot where Sir Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin and memorial to the Dr Edward Jenner who created the worlds first vaccine, a medieval herbal remedies garden and a visit to the tomb of the man who founded the oldest hospital in the Western World (just next door).

All this and more! This tour is for everyone and isn’t particularly aimed at people in the Medical profession.

This is a walking tour but with 4 short tube journeys between entirely different neighbourhoods so it is also pretty much a given you will see parts of London that you wouldn’t normally get to see (like many of our other tours). Depending on the day you book your tour, we will try and visit inside either The Foundling Museum, St Thomas Old Operating Theatre or St Bartholomew’s Hospital Museum but this is dependent on the part-time museums being open which is out of our control.
