Stonehenge and Avebury Tour

Stonehenge is right up there with the Pyramids as a wonder of the world. It would be a shame to visit Britain without marvelling at its wonder. There are actually hundreds of similar stone monuments in the British Isles and nearby is Avebury, bigger, older and almost empty of tourists. Escape from London for a day and see them both in our Stonehenge and Avebury Tour.

Constructed approximately 5,000 years ago, Stonehenge is just one of hundreds of such sites scattered around the British countryside but none has captured the imagination like Stonehenge.  Amazingly Stonehenge is just the latest structure on the site but there is evidence of construction works being on the site 10,000 years ago.  Their exact nature is something open to debate; could Stonehenge be an ancient observatory or time-keeping device or perhaps a religious or healing centre but it seems clear these massive stones were carried hundreds of miles away from Wales. What is indisputable is that there is something special at Stonehenge and you’ll feel connected to our ancestors thousands of years ago.

Nearby is the ancient monument of Avebury and part of the greater Stonehenge site. It’s actually much larger in size than Stonehenge itself along with another location, Silbury Hill burial mound. Almost across the world is the eerily beautiful West Kennet Longbarrow. Our London based Stanmore Walking Tour also visits some pre-historic monuments.
