The Roman City of St. Albans has a long and rich history but is also small enough to see in a day without rushing. Originally inhabited by ancient British tribes, it later became a major Roman city and as Roman ruins in the park and a small amphitheatre and Roman museum.
Modern St. Albans is dominated by it’s glorious Abbey which is a Cathedral in all but name. Here you can wonder at the amazing architecture and learn the story of Saint Albans, who was martyred here and visit his elaborate though fragile tomb.
St. Albans is also home to a market on its cobbled-stone streets as well as several notable churches including that of St. Michaels reputed to be the burial place of Francis Bacon.
Alternatively a visit to the home of playwright George Bernard Shaw who lived in a beautiful country home nearby where his house is exactly as he left it except for his Oscar which is on display!
